The freshmen volleyball team took a loss to the Chesterton Trojans with scores of 25-16, 25-19 and 15-9 on Thursday, Aug. 27. The girls underestimated the other team, but they still tried their hardest and played with their all.

“They learned [this game] that they’re beatable,” Coach Jamie Rodgers said.

The girls started off by losing the first set with a score of 25-16. Even though they lost, the girls still played well and stepped up their game.

“I think some players that typically don’t play as much played really well today. I was surprised by our middle hitter, Alexa Sherlund (9), [because] she was hitting really well. Emily Gaines (9) was picking up a lot of balls and has improved on her leadership out there,” Coach Rodgers said.

The girls lost the second set with a score of 25-19. The team realized that they really needed to communicate better and work as a team.

“I think when we’re all communicating, working together and focused on the play we do the best. We’re ready and playing with all we have,” Hope Huenecke (9) said.

Even though the team lost this game it really helped them in the long run. They have learned the teamwork skills and improvements that they need.

“[This game] showed that even if you’re down, whether it’s a game that doesn’t count or a championship match, you can always bring your energy and come back from it,” Huenecke said.

The next freshmen volleyball home game is on Tuesday, Sept. 8 from 5-6 p.m. The game will be against Michigan City.
